THE CAPSTONE — When the Artist Started Finding His Voice

Before LZ became LZThir13, the journey continued with a second chapter: The Capstone.

If Mr. 13 Personality captured the young artist discovering what he could do, The Capstone represents the moment he began discovering what he wanted to say.

Still without a fully established artist name or industry machine behind him, LZ began moving against the conventions of the music around him. The confidence remained—but the music was becoming more passionate, more observant, and increasingly concerned with awareness, experience, struggle, and purpose.

This wasn’t music created simply to follow what was popular.

It was an artist beginning to build his own world.

And this time, the music started leaving the studio.

Songs from this era were performed as LZThir13 traveled and performed between New York, New Jersey, and Atlanta, introducing the material directly to audiences. There was no major-label campaign behind it. CDs were sold independently—even out of the back of his car—one listener at a time.

It was grassroots.

It was uncertain.

But it was movement.

Then the story took an unexpected turn.

Just as the artist was beginning to push the project further, his journey was interrupted by incarceration. What might have become the next stage of the album’s independent campaign was suddenly stopped.

That history gives The Capstone a different meaning today.

The weathered book on the album cover almost feels like a metaphor for what the project became: a surviving page from an unfinished chapter.

The music preserves the person LZ was becoming before life changed the direction of the story.

For new listeners, The Capstone is an opportunity to hear the evolution between the young personality of the first album and the artist who would eventually emerge as LZThir13.

For longtime listeners and collectors, it’s something more:

an artifact from the years when the name was still being discovered.

Before the established catalog.
Before the larger concepts.
Before the brand.
Before everything that followed.

There was a young independent artist traveling from NJ to NY to ATL, performing his records, carrying CDs, selling his own music and trying to build something from the ground up.

Then everything stopped.

But the music survived.

LZThir13 — THE CAPSTONE

The second chapter. The voice was forming. The journey was just beginning.
